For The Bus, we’re currently working on the Berlin-Charlottenburg DLC, which will include routes 109 and 309. In this DevLog, we’ll show you, using several screenshots, how the new routes are taking shape step by step.
All content shown is still under development and is subject to change prior to release.
The Basic Structure of Roads
To begin with, templates and splines are created along the map of Berlin. This allows the individual streets to be precisely traced and prepared as a basis for further work.
The templates are then flexibly replaced with the appropriate spline variants. This allows for the creation of different sidewalks, roadside areas, and adjacent areas that blend seamlessly with their respective surroundings.

Markings and Road Surfaces
Once the route of the roads has been determined, the appropriate road markings are placed based on the reference material. These include, among other things, turn arrows, lanes, and lane lines.
The actual road surfaces and larger areas that cannot be fully represented using splines are filled in with polygons. They are then assigned the appropriate road materials.

AI Traffic
Once the basic road network is in place, the AI lanes—shown in green—are added. They define the routes for AI traffic and control the vehicles’ behavior.
Various parameters are defined, including permitted vehicle types, speed limits, turning maneuvers, right-of-way rules, and traffic density. In this way, the road network is gradually prepared for traffic.

Traffic Lights and Traffic Flow
The next step is to install the traffic signal systems and configure the individual signal phases. These must be coordinated with one another so that intersections function properly and traffic flows smoothly.

Stops and Route
Finally, the bus stops are set up and labeled with their respective names and route assignments. This ensures that they are correctly recorded in the route planner.
The stops will then be connected to the road network via dedicated AI lanes. This will create the technical foundation needed to route lines 109 and 309 through Berlin at a later date.

Work on the Berlin-Charlottenburg DLC continues. In future DevLogs, we’ll give you more insights into the development of lines 109 and 309.
